Somaliland has one of the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world. Against this backdrop of maternal and infant mortality, female circumcision, and sparse access to healthcare, 2023s Templeton Prize winner Edna Adan Ismail, has made it her mission to improve the quality of healthcare services to women in her country, while advocating for women's rights and equality.
The Edna Adan Hospital was founded in 2002 and has been operating as a non-profit since then. The mission of the hospital is to train fully qualified healthcare professionals and dispatch more than 1,000 community midwives throughout the country. Another important goal of the hospital is to fight the practice of FGM which is a practice endemic throughout the region. Many women experience extreme difficulty giving birth because of this practice as the hospital has made it its goal to educate society to cease this practice.
More than 30,000 babies have been born at the Edna Hospital since 2002. Not only does the hospital attend to expectant mothers and infants, but it also treats all manner of medical conditions that present at their facility. Edna realized that because of this, there were not enough trained nurses to meet the growing demand and began a nurse training program to address the need. This donation will be used to train a cadre of midwives and nurses that are equipped to meet the needs of communities throughout Somaliland while also ensuring a level of capacity building in the medical field.
