The Young Leadership Program* is an extracurricular mentorship program at the Cape Eleuthera Island School dedicated to the success of young people in South Eleuthera, The Bahamas. The program centers around the core values: academic vitality, personal resolve, fearless leadership and global awareness. The Island School’s Community Engagement and Partnerships team fosters meaningful relationships by engaging in education, conservation, and sustainability programs to advocate living well in a place.

With this grant, the program will encourage a cohort of high school seniors on a path to become leaders in their communities by building grit, determination, self-awareness, leadership, and conflict resolution skills through educational engagement and activities. Young people taking part in the program, will be supported to:

  • Develop tools for conflict resolution
  • Receive a high school diploma
  • Gain opportunities for travel
  • Become part of a supportive community for growth
  • Completed 50 community service hours
  • Build confidence and strong leadership skills
  • Develop public speaking and presentation skills

Programming includes access to educational resources, one-on-one mentorship, and experiential learning opportunities such as overnight camps, SCUBA certification and kayak expeditions.

Impact will be measured by:

  • Graduation rate
  • Community involvement
  • Consistent attendance
  • Behavioral expectations
  • Growth in sense of self and self esteem

*The Young Leadership Program (formerly the Young Men's Leadership Program) at the Island School has now expanded its focus to include young girls and boys in the South Eleuthera community.
