The Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in the Social Sciences (BITSS), part of the Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) at the University of California Berkeley, works to improve scientific credibility by advancing transparency, reproducibility, rigor, and ethics in empirical research. For a new project, BITSS will facilitate the adoption of innovative open science tools and practices among Templeton World Charity Foundation (TWCF) partners, grantees, and potential applicants.
Over twelve months, the project will implement a set of activities structured around four broad aims:
- Launching a series of interactive monthly webinars over 8-10 months that demonstrate and promote the use of innovative tools and practices for research transparency and reproducibility. Potential topics include research ethics, pre-registration, publishing data and code, replicability and reproducibility, evidence synthesis, diversity and equity in science, innovations in peer review, open access, and open-source software for research.
- Directly impacting the research practices of ARC 2022 RFP cohort through a four-day workshop featuring instruction and hands-on experience with faculty feedback. The workshop will provide opportunities for hands-on skills-building and collaboration.
- Evaluating the effectiveness of the BITSS research transparency workshop and its impact on learners. (See aim 2 above.)
- Building a community of open science champions to facilitate the long-term take-up of open science tools in research supported by TWCF.
